Book Party: Czech Plays: Seven New Works
Co-edited by Marcy Arlin, Gwynn MacDonald, and Dr. Daniel Gerould

Please join us as we celebrate the publication of CZECH PLAYS: SEVEN NEW WORKS, the first English-language anthology of Czech plays written after the 1989 Velvet Revolution. These seven works are selected from Czech Plays in Translation, the New York series of readings produced by 2003 OBIE winner Immigrants’ Theatre Project over the last eight years and presented at Henry Street Settlement, New York Theatre Workshop, The Public Theater, and the Bohemian National Hall.
The anthology features Aquabelles by David Drábek, Miriam by Lenka Lagronová, Dad Takes Kick Goals by Jiří Pokorný, Opening the Drawer and Pulling out the Knife by Ivana Růžičková, I Promised Freddy by Egon Tobiáš, Minach by Iva Klestilová Volánková, and Theremin by Petr Zelenka, with introductions by Daniel Gerould, Marcy Arlin, Gwynn MacDonald.
The plays explore sex and gender identity, ethnicity and violence, political corruption and religious taboos. Using innovative forms and diverse styles, they tackle the new realities of Czech society brought on by democracy and globalization with characteristic humor and intelligence.
Excerpts from the plays will be read by a cast of talented and well-known New York actors, followed by a discussion of new Czech theater and an audience Q & A. The panel includes co-editors Daniel Gerould, Gwynn MacDonald and Marcy Arlin; Pavla Petrová, Director of Arts and Theatre Institute,Prague, Czech Republic; Sodja Lupanc Lotker, translator, Artistic Director of the Prague Quadrenniale; and the playwrights.
The evening is supported by the Czech Center New York, Marcel Sauer, Director; Immigrants’ Theatre Project; and public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs.
