Contemporary Mexican Theatre: Mario Espinosa Ricalde with David Olguín

Two prominent figures in contemporary Mexican theatre join us from Mexico City to discuss trends in Mexican theatre today: director Mario Espinosa and playwright David Olguín. Mr. Espinosa, who has staged major works including Yazmina Reza's Art and Michael Frayn's Copenhagen in Mexico City, is currently Director of the University Theatre Center at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). Award-winning Playwright David Olguín's recent plays include Casanova o la fugacidad, Siberia and La lengua de los muertos (2009). He also teaches playwriting through the Foundation for Mexican Letters. Presented with the support of the Mexican Cultural Institute of New York.
Mario Espinosa

Mario Espinosa is a prominent theatre director and arts manager based in Mexico City. He studied directing at the University Theatre Center of the UNAM (National Autonomous University of Mexico) and received fellowships from institutions in Germany, the UK and the US. Mr. Espinosa has staged numerous plays and operas, including Fernando del Paso's Palinuro en la Escalera, Gounod's Faust, Yazmina Reza's Art, Verdi's Simon Boccanegra, Michael Frayn's Copenhagen, Martin McDonagh's The Pillowman, Caryl Churchill's A Number, Flavio Gonzalez Mello's Edip en Colofon and Gabriela Ortiz' opera Unicamente la verdad. He wrote and directed the millenial festivities "Del siglo XX al tercer mileno" celebrated in Mexico City's Zocalo (central square). Mr. Espinosa has served as Executive Secretary for Mexico's National Fund for Culture and the Arts, National Coordinator for the Theatre of the National Fine Arts Institute, and Theatre Coordinator for the Mexico City Secretary of Culture. He is currently the director of the UNAM's University Theatre Center.
David Olguín

David Olguín is a playwright, director and librettist based in Mexico City. His plays include La representación, La puerta del fondo, Dolores o la felicidad, Belice (Winner of the National Theatre Prize in 2000), Clipperton and Casanova o la humillación, among others, and his novels include Amarillo fúnebre and Los habladores. He also wrote the libretto for Federico Ibarra's opera Despertar al sueño. In addition to directing most of his own plays, he has staged works by playwrights such as García Lorca, Löher, Ibargüengoitia, Tovar and Tremblay. Mr. Olguin is the Editor of Ediciones El Milagro and a member of the National System of Artistic Creators in Mexico. His work has been translated into multiple languages and staged in multiple countries. Most recently, he wrote and staged the plays Casanova o la fugacidad, Siberia and La lengua de los muertos (2009). Since 2005, he has served as a playwriting instructor at the Foundation for Mexican Letters. In 2007, Mr. Olguin's play Siberia received the Tenth International "Domingo Perez Minik" Playwriting Prize in Spain.
