Barbara Hampton is the author of studies on African and African -American music and issues of gender and popular music, a few of which are cited below. Served on Council and National Executive Board of the Society for Ethnomusicology, Editor of the Society for Ethnomusicology Newsletter and member of its Editorial Board. National committees of the African Studies Association. Panels of the New York State Council on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts (also Panel Chair), the Fulbright Fellowship Program, and the National Academy of Sciences (FF/NRC). Organized Mid-Atlantic Chapter of the Society for Ethnomusicology and the Music and Gender Study Group of the International Council for Traditional Music. Appearances on National Public Radio, the BBC and PBS (Great Performances). Chair of the Hunter College Senate.
