Faculty :: Course Requirements :: Admissions :: Completed Dissertations COURSE REQUIREMENTS FOR ETHNOMUSICOLOGY MAJORS For students concentrating in
ethnomusicology, the first 30 credits should include the
following six courses (or their equivalent): Research Techniques
in Ethnomusicology (MUS 71200); three other seminars in
ethnomusicology; one seminar in Western music; one course in
anthropology. All students must then complete an additional 30 credits of coursework. These courses should include: four 800-level research seminars in music (one must be a regional studies seminar, and one must be on a cross-cultural topic); and two courses in anthropology or another approved related field (which may include further 700-level or 800-level courses, and/or independent study). Students who do not have a master's degree in ethnomusicology must take Part A of the First examination, which consists of a day-long written exam, upon reaching 30 credits. All students pursuing the Ph.D. must pass Part B of the First examination, which is a two-week paper assignment. Completion of Parts A and B is required for the "en route" M.A., which is awarded at 45 credits. All candidates for the Ph.D. must also pass language examinations and the Second (or Comprehensive) examination; and they must submit a dissertation. Music Programs •The Graduate
