Music Ph.D. and D.M.A. Programs
The Music Program at the CUNY Graduate Center consists of five areas of
concentration: (1) Musicology, (2) Theory/Analysis,
(3) Ethnomusicology, (4) Composition
(PhD & DMA), and (5) Performance (DMA).

The Ph.D.-D.M.A. Program in Music takes particular pride in the extent to which it
encourages students to pursue interdisciplinary work (something for which The Graduate
Center is especially well suited) and the degree to which it truly integrates its five
concentrations, viewing scholarship, composition, and performance as being inseparable
from one another.
Some sense of the scope and diversity the CUNY Music Program may be seen by browsing
through the list of dissertations
completed at CUNY. Many of these are classics in their fields, and a number have
been published.
The program is also proud of the way in which it fosters study of the vibrant
multi-cultural urban environment in which it thrives (and thus reflects a central theme of
research at The Graduate Center). Thanks to a $1,500,000 endowment from the Baisley Powell
Elebash Fund, the Music program is particularly well financed in terms of programming
activities and dissertation-level fellowships that deal specifically with music in New
York City, both past and present.
Under the umbrella of the Barry S. Brook
Center for Music Research and Documentation, a large number of national and
international projects, publications, and research centers that have their headquarters at
the Graduate Center provides doctoral students with the opportunity to do research and
gain professional experience in various specialties.
The Graduate Center's Music Ph.D. Program was rated fourth in the nation with respect to
its faculty by the National Research Council in its most recent ranking of doctoral
programs in the humanities and social sciences.
