APPLICATION PROCESS

Applications are to include three copies of the NEH Institute application cover sheet, available via the NEH website; three copies of a detailed resume (not to exceed five pages); three copies of an application essay (as outlined below), and two letters of recommendation (sent separately). The stipend for participants is $3,600.

Your essay is the most important component of your application materials. It should be no more than four double spaced pages. It should explain your reasons for applying; your interest, both professional and personal, in the subject matter of the Institute; aspects of your background that suit you for participation in the Institute; the contribution you believe you can make to the vitality of the Institute; the project you intend to pursue at the Institute and its planned result; the use you intend to make of the Institute in your career.

Your reference letters are also important. The referees should be familiar with your professional background, your rationale for attending the Institute, and (ideally) with the project you plan to conduct at the Institute. At least one of the letters should come from an individual not affiliated with your home institution.

Completed applications must be sent to the Institute’s Selection Committee and must be postmarked no later than March 1, 2006. The selection committee is comprised of faculty expert in various aspects of human rights. Successful applicants will be notified of their selection by April 1, 2006, and they have until April 15 to accept or decline the offer. Applicants who will not be at home during the notification period must provide an address and phone number where they can be reached. No information about the status of applications will be available prior to the official notification period.

In accord with NEH rules, applicants for membership in the Institute must be citizens of the United States or Permanent
