Funding

The following fellowships and awards are administered by OEODP and seek to expand opportunities for members of underrepresented groups in doctoral study.

Prospective Students

Only students who have been admitted to the CUNY Graduate Center are eligible for the Five-Year President’s Fellowships and the J. Bruce Llewellyn Fellowships; therefore an application to the doctoral program of your choice must be received in the Office of Admissions by February 1st even if the program’s application deadline is later.

Current Students

To be considered for any financial support through OEODP, students must be citizens or permanent residents, must be in good academic standing in their program, and must be enrolled fulltime, carrying no less than 7 credit hours.

MAGNET Five-Year President’s Fellowships

DEADLINE: February 1
Five-year President’s Fellowships are offered to entering full-time students from underrepresented groups in any one of the 32 doctoral programs available at The Graduate Center of The City University of New York.

The Five-year President’s Fellowships carry a stipend of $18,000 per academic year, in addition to full tuition. Awards are based on academic merit and financial need and applicants must file for financial assistance. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Renewal of the award each year is contingent upon academic performance.

Students are nominated by the Executive Officers of their doctoral programs. Please contact your doctoral programs for more information about the nomination process.

J. Bruce Llewellyn Fellowship

DEADLINE: March 1
For Doctoral Study in Biochemistry, Biology, Biopsychology, Business, Chemistry, Computer Science, Earth and Environmental Sciences, Economics, Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, and Speech and Hearing Sciences

A one-year fellowship is offered to currently enrolled students from underrepresented groups in the doctoral programs listed above at CUNY.  The fellowship is named for James Bruce Llewellyn, an alumnus of The City College of The City University of New York, current honorary member and former Vice Chair of The Graduate Center Foundation Board of Trustees, in recognition of his distinguished career in business and government.

The Llewellyn Fellowship carries a stipend of $10,000 (subject to available funds) plus tuition remission. Continuing students must pass the first departmental examination and have a maximum 50 credits within the first three years of enrollment in the program. Renewal is contingent upon satisfactory academic progress.  Candidates (who must be
U.S. citizens or permanent residents) will be considered on the basis of demonstrated financial need, exceptional academic performance in one of the above areas, personal history and accomplishments.

Dean K. Harrison Award

DEADLINE: March 1
Awards are offered to entering students from underrepresented groups in the 32 doctoral programs at CUNY.  This award is named for Dean K. Harrison, the founder of OEODP, formerly known as the Office of Expanded Educational Opportunity, in honor of his twenty-five years of service to The Graduate Center, and his efforts to help attract and maintain talented underrepresented minorities in CUNY’s doctoral programs. Awards are made on the basis of academic merit and need.

The amount of the award is determined by OEODP’s Executive Officer in consultation with the Executive Officer of the academic program of the applicant. Students must be citizens or permanent residents and must apply annually for stipend and/or tuition support.

Current Students

MAGNET Two-Year President’s Fellowship

DEADLINE: March 1
Two-year fellowships are offered to full-time students from underrepresented groups currently enrolled in any of the thirty-two doctoral programs available at CUNY. Students who have passed the First Examination and completed a maximum of 50 credits, or who have completed the First Examination and are within the first three years of residency by June are eligible to apply for a Two-Year President’s Fellowship for the following two academic years.

Award stipends are $18,000 per academic year, in addition to full tuition remission. Awards are based on academic merit and financial need. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Renewal of the award for the second year is contingent upon satisfactory academic progress.

Students are nominated by the Executive Officers of their doctoral programs and must submit a detailed written statement of his or her academic and research plans, official transcripts and two letters of recommendations. One-year fellowships are available to currently enrolled students from underrepresented groups to facilitate in the final stages of their dissertations. Each one-year award carries a stipend of $20,000 and full tuition remission. Awards are based on quality of the thesis proposal, the strength of faculty recommendations, the likelihood of completion within one year and financial need.

Students may apply for the fellowships directly or may be nominated by the Executive Officers of their doctoral programs.

William Randolph Hearst Dissertation Year Award

DEADLINE: February 1
A one-year dissertation award is offered to currently enrolled students from underrepresented groups in the doctoral programs listed above at CUNY.  The William Randolph Hearst Dissertation Year Award is available to currently enrolled students who have advanced to candidacy and who are in the final stages of their dissertations. The one-year award carries a stipend of $8,000 and full tuition remission. Awards are based on quality of the thesis proposal, the strength of faculty recommendations, the likelihood of completion within one year and financial need.

Chancellor's Postdoctoral Fellowships

DEADLINE: June 30
One-year fellowships are available to Graduate School alumni who have earned their CUNY doctorates within the past five years. Chancellor's Fellows teach one course during one semester within the CUNY system, and during the other semester assist in the recruitment of students from underrepresented groups for doctoral study and serve as mentors for recipients of the five-year President's Fellowship. Chancellor's Fellows are also expected to engage in research.

Candidates for this award may apply directly or be nominated by the Executive Officers of the programs from which they graduated or by the student's dissertation sponsor. Criteria include scholarship, communication, interpersonal skills, and demonstrated commitment to improving opportunities for minority graduate study. Applicants must submit to OEODP, a current curriculum vitae listing all previous teaching experience and scholarly work, and a detailed written statement in which the applicant describes his or her academic and research plans for the next five years, with special emphasis on teaching, research projects, and publications.

Stipends are $36,000 for the year.
