| "Rousseau on Desire" In this paper I develop an account of the taxonomy of desires that Rousseau employs to evaluate different forms and degrees of social life, including tribalism, the division of labor, and the directed sociality of his hypothetical Emile. This taxonomy helps to illuminate Rousseau's various appraisals of the natural and unnatural aspects of social forms, which have often vexed those interpreters who insist that a nature/society dichotomy is foundational in Rousseau's thought. I also apply this taxonomy to elucidate problematic aspects of On the Social Contract, giving special attention to the so-called "circularity objection" to Rousseau's argument regarding virtue and the general will. |
