Interdisciplinary Studies
In addition to doctoral work in individual fields The Graduate Center offers opportunities for interdisciplinary research and training. It recognizes that the development of knowledge crosses traditional departmental boundaries and that interdisciplinary study constitutes a sound and stimulating approach to scholarship. Students interested in interdisci-plinary work, like all other doctoral students, are enrolled in one of the programs offered and are expected to fulfill the requirements of that program. At the same time, doctoral students can take advantage of several kinds of interdisci-plinary doctoral studies.
IDS Steering Committee
To facilitate interdisciplinary work, The Graduate Center has established the Interdisciplinary Studies Steering Committee, which is responsible for encouraging and developing interdisciplinary graduate studies. The IDS Steering Commit-tee reviews proposals for at-large IDS courses and oversees existing IDS concentrations.
IDS Concentrations
The Graduate Center offers a number of interdisciplinary concentrations. Some of the concentrations regularly offer core courses, while others guide students in finding courses across different academic disciplines that relate to the concentration. When students finish the requirements for a concentration, they are awarded a printed certificate but not a transcript notation.
Interdisciplinary curricula and concentrations have been de-veloped in:
Students fulfilling the requirements of one of the existing doctoral programs can fashion a specialization in any one of the concentrations under the supervision of specialists within these areas.
Certificate Programs
Six interdisciplinary certificate programs are offered:
Students who fulfill the requirements of a certificate program have this noted on their transcripts when they graduate.
