Chancellor's Fellowships and Enhanced Chancellor's Fellowships
Beginning in Fall, 2004, The Graduate Center introduced the Chancellor’s Fellowship (CF), a new fellowship package to recruit outstanding students to CUNY doctoral programs. Chancellor’s Fellowships include a five-year tuition scholarship paid at the in-state tuition rate plus a promise of a teaching position within CUNY during years two, three, and four of the Fellowship. The teaching component is known as a Graduate Teaching Fellowship (GTF)*.
In Fall 2007, The Graduate Center introduced the Enhanced Chancellor’s Fellowship – a five-year recruitment package similar to the original Chancellor’s Fellowship but with improved funding. Enhanced Chancellor’s Fellowships (ECFs) also provide five-years of in-state tuition support and the guarantee of a teaching position at one of the CUNY colleges in the form of a Graduate Teaching Fellowship (GTF)* in years two, three and four of the recipient’s studies. However, during year one, ECFs receive a stipend of $18,000 for which service may be required at the option of the recipient’s doctoral program. In the second, third and fourth years of the Fellowship ECFs receive the GTF salary combined with a small stipend which will bring the total yearly funding to $18,000. In year five, ECFs receive a service-related fellowship which carries a salary of $20,195.
*Information Concerning the Graduate Teaching Fellowship Position: The GTF position carries an annual workload requirement of 180 contact hours, typically satisfied by four 3-credit courses (or three 4-credit courses) over the academic year. Under the terms of the current collective bargaining contract between CUNY and its union, the Professional Staff Congress, GTFs are paid $16,542 in the first annual appointment, with contractual increases to $17,398 and $18,374 in the subsequent two appointments.
At this time, the GTF does not provide health insurance, however, students may purchase a policy available to all Graduate Center students.
