The mission of the Ph.D. Program in Psychology is to encourage its students to become thoughtful, productive scholars and lifelong learners. We seek to (a) instill in our students an understanding of psychology as a science, (b) promote human welfare and serve society at large, (c) foster student growth and development, and (d) prepare students to serve professionally in the field of psychology or related areas. This mission comes in the context of the larger Graduate Center mission to serve its unusually diverse student population.
The Ph.D. Program in Psychology prepares students for research, teaching, and practice in the various fields of psychology. Students may specialize in one of the following thirteen areas: biopsychology and behavioral neuroscience; clinical psychology; clinical forensic psychology; clinical neuropsychology; cognition, brain, and behavior; cognitive neuroscience; developmental psychology; environmental psychology; experimental forensic psychology; industrial/organizational psychology; learning processes and behavior analysis; basic neuropsychology; and social/personality psychology. Our doctoral faculty includes many top scholars in their fields of study as well as journal editors and leaders of professional societies and organizations. The faculty and their labs are based on eight campuses throughout the CUNY system, with courses offered at the Graduate Center, at the college campuses, and in consortium with other local universities, including Columbia, NYU, and Princeton.
Students can also take full advantage of a variety of interdisciplinary concentrations, research centers and institutes, and other specialized programs throughout the Graduate Center that are relevant to psychology, such as those focusing on health psychology, public health, women’s studies, Africana studies, fashion studies, and LGBTQ studies. The Psychology Student Leadership Council (PSLC), made up of doctoral students from all of the specialized areas, works with the Executive Officer to put on a series of cross-CUNY psychology events annually. These include a Welcome Back “mixer” every fall, a Teaching of Psychology conference in the fall, and an All-Psychology Student Research Day in the spring semester—which includes thematic panels, poster sessions, and a DataBlitz—featuring the wide-ranging research of doctoral students in psychology. Many distinguished speakers and visiting scholars provide lectures in all areas, and other professional development opportunities are provided for students.
Executive Officer: Maureen O' Connor, Ph.D., J.D.
