Admission to all eleven psychology subprograms is through the Office
of Admissions at the Graduate Center. The application process is done online.
The
structure of the Graduate Center enables all graduate students to
take part in courses of no more than ten students. Students participate
in independent/supervised research, study groups created with other
students, and interdisciplinary seminars initiated by faculty and/or
students. By virtue of students' full time status, the small class
size, and the absence of undergraduates, doctoral students work
very closely with faculty and with other students, on questions
of theory, pursued through quantitative and qualitative research
methodologies.
Applicants
to the Doctoral program in Psychology are accepted only in the fall
and only for full-time study. Although it is not necessary
to have been an undergraduate psychology major, some course-work
in psychology is required as a prerequisite for admission -- at
a minimum, courses in statistics and experimental psychology. Applicants
must submit scores from the Verbal, Quantitative and Analytic sections
of the Graduate Record Examination, as well as the Advanced Test
in Psychology. Foreign-born applicants should also submit scores
from the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language).
Applicants
are evaluated by a faculty-student committee that considers undergraduate
and graduate course performance, GRE scores, research experience,
work experience, letters of recommendation and the applicant's statement
of professional goals and interests.
Application
and financial aid forms can be requested from the Admissions Office.
The deadline for completed application materials can be found here.
It is the applicant's responsibility to ensure that all application
materials have been received by CUNY by the required date and to
take the GRE and TOEFL exams at a time which will ensure that scores
arrive by the deadline.
Although
these are not times of financial plenty and we cannot now promise
assistance to all of our students, we ask that all applicants complete
the financial aid form (whether or not you are now requesting aid).
This form must be on file in order for you to be eligible for research
assistantships, fellowships, or loans administered through CUNY.
Note also that there is a Minority Fellowship Program through which
financial assistance may be obtained.
Each subprogram has its own admissions committee.
