“There is nothing so practical as a good theory” -- Kurt Lewin
Sitting at the heart of one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the world, the Social/Personality Psychology program at the Graduate Center enjoys a 40 year history as a doctoral space for the intellectual pursuit of theory and research of use. Molded in the Lewinian tradition, our program is highly participatory and diverse, with courses, mentorships, research apprenticeships, examinations and work groups organized to address the interrelations between theory, research, action and policy. Inspired by Frances Russell’s 1946 assertion that social psychology should be “oil for the lamps of democracy,” faculty and students craft our work with a sense of responsibility to produce scholarship toward social justice. We collaborate with colleagues in universities and community partners to design theory rich explorations of applied social problems in settings as varied as schools, communities, hospitals, prisons, public spaces, the streets and the everyday spaces of everyday life, in the U.S. and around the globe.
