Guidelines for Contributors to Music in Art
Submissions. Music in Art includes original articles on music iconography and the relationship between music and art. Articles may be submitted in English, French, Italian, Spanish, or German. Submissions will be read by a panel of referees, whose recommendations will determine whether or not a paper is accepted. Quotations in non-modern languages should be given in their original form in the main text with the translation in a footnote. Manuscripts should be submitted, in electronic form, in Microsoft Word or WordPerfect for PC together with a printout, to The Editor at the Research Center for Music Iconography, 365 Fifth Avenue, New York, NY 10016-4309.Regardless of the language of the article, the author is responsible for providing an English-language summary (200-300 words) and a short biographical note. The summary - declarative rather than descriptive - must state directly the key findings and give the content of the essay.
Illustrations. Authors are encouraged to make as much of an effort to obtain high-quality artwork for reproduction with the essay as they do to write the essay itself. Without good-quality pictures the essay cannot be presented at its best. Illustrations for reproduction should be submitted in TIFF format, 300 dpi or higher. Xerox copies of photographs are not acceptable. Drawings and sketches have to be provided camera-ready. Authors are responsible for obtaining permission to publish each of their illustrations. Each caption must include the name of the collection where the original is held and its inventory number. Captions, typed in a separate "List of Illustrations", should be in the following format:
Names of institutions should be provided in the original language. Bibliographic references should be included at the end of the text in the following format:
Authors should pay attention to: (1) include the first (given) names of all authors of cited material; (2) provide page extents for all cited articles or chapters; and (3) provide for the first reference in footnotes a full citation, with subsequent references using a short title. Reviews. The journal includes reviews of books and exhibitions. Publishers are encouraged to send to the editor review copies of books. Organizers of music-related exhibitions should send catalogues for a review, and if possible the press kit prepared for the exhibition. Letters to the editor. The editor reserves the right to publish letters in excerpted form and to edit for concision and clarity.
