The Violin: De-Coding Perfection

Toby Faber is the author of Stradivari’s Genius: Five Violins, One Cello, and Three Centuries of Enduring Perfection.
Sam Zygmuntowicz builds violins, violas and cellos for an international clientele including Isaac Stern and the Emerson String Quartet.

Sam Zygmuntowicz will speak on:

- How the myth of Strad obscures the actual meaning and nature of the work, and how the genius resides in an entire system of empirical technology, including restorers and adjusters.

- How some traditionally trained top violinmakers are beginning to tease out the inner workings of the violin, with guidance from acoustic researchers, and illuminated by the judicious use of increasingly user-friendly and accessible computer software.

- How it adds up to a new way of seeing, hearing and making the violin.
