CSI has a commitment to interdisciplinary research and outstanding facilities for doctoral work in a wide variety of disciplines. Historically, the College of Staten Island has housed the polymer chemistry sub-discipline of the PhD Program in Chemistry and is home to nearly all of the polymer chemists at CUNY. A strong College-wide focus on applied mathematics permeates our doctoral programs and provides the possibility that Ph. D. students may work on theoretical and computational aspects of their research in addition to the laboratory and field components. In the biological sciences we have an unusually strong emphasis on field ecology in an urban setting, as well as a commitment to neuroscience in collaboration with the New York State Office of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities. We collaborate with both industrial and state agencies in providing diverse research opportunities in areas ranging from polymeric materials, nanomaterials and photonics to developmental disabilities, environmental science, ecological modeling and biomolecular structure.
