 This course is a seminar course which covers auditory sensation and perception. Topics covered will include: psychophysical methods; The perception of loudness; Frequency selectivity, masking and the critical band; Temporal processing in the auditory system; Pitch perception; Space Perception; Auditory pattern and object perception, Practical applications such as sound quality, musical acoustics.   The major emphasis will be on normal hearing individuals, but research with hearing impaired listeners (and those with cochlear implants) will also be covered.  The exact topics will depend on the interests of the students.

Lectures, discussion and readings will be supplemented by laboratory exercises to enable students to experience some of the experimental paradigms used in psychoacoustic research.

Credits 3

Grade will be based on presentations to the class and an in depth term paper on a topic of choice.
