This course will cover auditory sensation and
perception. Topics covered will include: Psychophysical methods; The
perception of loudness; Frequency selectivity, masking and the
critical band; psychophysical estimates of cochlear compression;
Temporal processing in the auditory system; Pitch Perception; Space
Perception; Auditory pattern and object perception. It will also
include practical applications such as sound quality. The major
emphasis will be on normal hearing individuals, but research with
hearing impaired listeners (and those with cochlear implants) will
also be covered. The exact topics will depend on the interests of
the students.
