CUNY Nonsense Syllable Test
Download: CUNY-NST,

The CUNY Nonsense Syllable Test (Resnick, Dubno, Hoffnung, and Levitt, 1975) is a closed set test consisting of VC and CV syllables in three vowel environments. There are 11 sets, seven "core" sets and four optional sets.

The 11 sets are as follows:

SET 1 SET 2 SET 3 SET 4 SET 5
ak  uØ  ip az ta
at up ik ag fa
ap us if ang ka
uk a sa
af ut it am tòa
as uf iò   ad qa

SET 6 SET 7 1 OPT 2 OPT 3 OPT 4 OPT
da ga òu   hi lv uv

ba ma fu pi id ug

For an explanation of test administration and a sample answer sheet, see Dubno and Dirks, 1982.

About the recordings

Each syllable was recorded embedded in a carrier phrase "You will mark ____, please". In each set one syllable is repeated (a different syllable in each protocol). When scoring, the two identical syllables each receive one-half point. There are six test protocols, i.e., six different recordings of the entire test. The files stored here were digitized from the original reel-to-reel recordings (sub-masters). In the original recordings the order of the sets was randomized, as was the order of the syllables in each set. You will find a calibration signal for each protocol. The calibration signal is equal to the average level of the word "mark" in the carrier phrase.

Note: The competing noise used in collecting normative data was an equalized cafeteria noise.

File naming convention format:

ppsc..cx.WAV

pp is the two character protocol code
s is the one character set number
c..c is the one to four letter graphical representation of the sound
x is 1 or 2 (or omitted for syllables not duplicated)
