Financial Aid
Application for Institutional Aid:
Students applying for financial aid should complete an application
for financial assistance with the Financial Aid Office. Complete
information on financial assistance may be found in the Bulletin
of The Graduate Center. United States citizens, permanent residents,
and international students are eligible for institutional aid. All
recipients of financial aid must be matriculated and in attendance
at The Graduate Center full-time. Students applying for admission
to the program and planning to enroll full-time should submit a
financial aid application with their application for admission.
Students who have been in the program on a part-time basis and plan
to continue in the program full-time may submit a financial aid
application as soon as that decision has been made. The deadline
for Fall applications is February 15, but it is recommended that
all information be received by the Financial Aid Office no later
than February 1. Applicants may also inquire about availability
of Federal loans which do not have the same deadlines and are available
to part-time students.
Program Financial Aid:
In addition to the various University awards, other forms of financial
aid are available through the Ph.D. program. These include research
assistantships that are supported by grants to members of the faculty
and/or research staff; predoctoral and postdoctoral research traineeships
supported by the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication
Disorders; and clinical traineeships from the Veterans Administration
Medical Centers. These awards enable students to pursue full-time
doctoral study and require students to participate in research and/or
clinical activities for a stipulated number of hours each week.
Continuation of Financial Aid:
Both institutional and program appointments are determined on the
basis of need and merit and may vary from year to year depending
on the availability of funds. It is not unusual that financial support
may be derived from both institutional and program funds and awarded
to the student as a combined "financial aid package." The continuation
of financial assistance is dependent upon satisfactory academic
performance and progress toward the completion of degree requirements.
Ordinarily, awards are made in the fall semester for the entire
academic year; in special circumstances awards may be made for one
semester. Summer financial support may be available through faculty
research grants. Students are encouraged to pursue full-time doctoral
study with continuing financial support to complete the degree within
the specified time limit.
