Admissions Guidelines

Deadlines

If you are interested in being considered for any form of financial aid, your application must be received by January 15. The earlier you submit your application, the more likely we'll be able to consider you for fellowships and other forms of assistance. We accept applications on a rolling basis from September 1 to May 1 each year.

Requirements

The Graduate Center requires current GRE scores, which cannot be waived; TOEFL scores for international students; at least two letters of recommendation; and undergraduate and graduate transcripts. Our Program requires a writing sample. This should be academic rather than creative writing and should demonstrate your ability to make and support an argument about a subject in theatre or performance studies. An example of this would be a Term Paper in a Theatre Class. The Program weighs the statement of purpose very heavily--do make sure you're explicit about your interests and the ways in which you think our Program will fit your needs. Recommendations should address your potential for academic study, rather than describing your work as a performer or technician.

Interview

Although we do not require an interview for admission, it's helpful for you to speak with faculty and other students as you make your decisions about graduate study. You can call the Assistant Program Officer at 212-817-8870 to set up an appointment with the Executive Officer if you are able to visit.

Transfer Credits

Credits from prior graduate work (up to 30) are transferred after matriculation. The Executive Officer handles this process.

Mentors

All entering students are assigned mentors to help them with course selection and other Program requirements until the dissertation, when the student selects their own director.

The Office Of Admissions

Your application is received by the Office of Admissions at the Graduate Center and sent to our Program when it is complete. To make sure that your application and necessary documents have been received, please call the Office of Admissions at 212-817-7470. Other important information can be accessed by clicking on The Office of Admissions link above.

Office of the Registrar

All students are required to be in status each semester. This means that students must either be registered or be on an approved leave of absence. Individuals who are not in status will be considered withdrawn from The Graduate Center.

Registration materials are mailed to students prior to the start of each semester. Students who do not receive their registration materials for the new semester before the end of the previous semester are responsible for notifying the Registrar and their program office that they have not received their materials. It is expected that all registrations will be completed by the end of the registration period. (See "Calendar," pages 2-4.)

For more information or Registration and Grading please click on the Office of the Registrar link above or call 212-817-7500.

Financial Aid

Financial Assistance at The Graduate Center consists of two major types of aid: institutional aid, for which The Graduate Center itself is the funding source, and federal and state aid. With the exception of dissertation year awards and the Student Employment Program, most institutional aid is awarded to students based on the nomination of the doctoral program in which the student is enrolled. Institutional funding is most often in the form of research and teaching assistantships, university fellowships, and tuition stipends. Federal aid for graduate students includes Federal Work-Study, Federal Direct Loans, and Federal Perkins Loans. New York State provides the Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) for eligible graduate students who are New York State residents. In all cases, federal and state aid is based solely on financial need. Institutional aid is based on a combination of need and merit.
