Admissions

ADMISSIONS

This page is designed to answer questions you may have about the process of applying for admission. Because every year numerous individuals apply, admission to the program is highly competitive. Sometimes applicants are not considered because they have not followed the specific directions of the application process. Because the process is time consuming and complex, it is important to determine whether you meet the minimum requirements for the program before you devote your energies to the application process.

  • Who should apply to the CUNY Ph.D. Program in Urban Education?

Only students who have completed a master's degree and possess some educational experience should apply. Applicants should have an interest in becoming researchers of urban education and be prepared for a rigorous and time-consuming academic program.

  • Where do I get an application?

The Office of Admissions at the CUNY Graduate Center, Room 7201, will have the applications and answers to some of the questions you may have. Their telephone number is 212-817-7470. Applications may also be downloaded from the web.

  • Do I need to take the GRE? How is it used in the admissions process?

All graduate students at the Graduate Center must take the GRE. More information on this matter is available on the Office of Admissions website. Have your scores sent directly to the CUNY Graduate Center (college code 2113). Our Admissions Committee does not use a cut-off or minimum score on the GRE. We examine an applicant's complete record, including the GRE as only one factor among many.

  • What other information is considered in the admission process?

The most important parts of an application are your academic records (what you studied and how well you did), your letters of recommendation (we pay most attention to those from university faculty members and education professionals), your essay describing your career history and goals and the specific reasons for your interest in our program. An interview may be involved—if the Admissions Committee requests one. You will be contacted if one is deemed necessary.

  • Can other material illustrating my qualifications for admission be sent?

You may send us one copy (which will not be returned) of any published research or policy analysis papers you may have written. If you have a personal website or webpage, you may email us the URL address. For any other materials you would like to submit, please contact us by email first (see below).

  • Is there a good time to meet in person with the faculty?

We hold informational open house meetings at the Graduate Center every December. To be notified of these meetings and receive other information, please send an email with information on how to contact you to: Urban_Ed@gc.cuny.edu
