Women's Voices: Oral History Project
Linking Communities and the University
|
Oral History: Debra Zimmerman
Organization: Women Make Movies, 462 Broadway, Room 500, New
York, NY 10013
Date of Interview:1998
Debra Zimmerman has been the Executive Director
of Women Make Movies since 1983. Founded in 1972 to facilitate the production
and exhibition of independent films and videotapes by and about women,
Women Make Movies remains the only major distributor of international women's
films at this time. Zimmerman's directorship was instrumental in WMM's
successful shift toward distribution. Through their role as a distributor,
Zimmerman correctly predicted that the organization, could not only become
self-sustaining, but could also ensure international access to over 400
films made by women with myriad backgrounds and experiences, return greater
royalties to artists, and fund a variety of other programs.
Interviewer: Hilary-Anne Hallett, a doctoral candidate in American
History at the City University of New York Graduate Center.
